1971: Summer TournamentsPart II (Brathwaite Beats Haslam To Win Central American Open; Haslam Wins U.S. Empire State Open). Though Richard Farrell has come to the July 17-18 $600 Great Lakes Open in Rochester after winning what Id called the Philadelphia Summer Open (actually, as Mal Anderson correctly pointed out, it was the Quaker City Open), hes unseeded and unplaced. Consequently, after hes had 5-game trouble in his opener with Canadian Junior Paul Klevinas, hes forced to meet in the 2nd round none other than Errol Resek, one of the favorites to win the tournament. (D-J Lee had entered but didnt show, perhaps becausehis car had been stolen?). Errol has put new rubber on his racket and is hoping to break it in gradually. (As if wife Jairie disapproves, she says to someone, He has other rackets he could use.
OCEAN CITY - Ocean City police officers pulled two unidentified men from the surf June 25 about 7:30 p.m. Called to the Eighth Street beach here along with firefighters, police saw the two men in the water and in distress. Using floatation devices and a tether rope, three officers went into the water and managed to pull the men to safety. The swimmers had scrapes and cuts on their legs and stomachs from being forced against a drainage pipe by the rough surf and a rip current. They were evaluated at the scene and did not need medical treatment. Later Guards Earlier OCEAN CITY - City council approved extended lifeguard hours at the Eighth, Ninth and 12th street beaches starting last weekend. In the past, July 4 was the normal start for the extended hours on Friday and Saturdays, which keep guards on the beach until 7 p.m.
FISCAL 2005-06 will go down as one of the great financial years. Ripe flavours of blackberry, plum and smoke. Big and oaky. Excellent length with a bit of acid on the finish. All fine fiscal years sound a note of uncertainty, however, and the 12 months just gone were no exception. Generally, the market followed a simple pattern. Punters bought their BHPs, AMPs and PBLs (but not so many IAGs or ERGs) at one price and sold at another. The second price was always much higher and everyone was most pleased with their success. This accomplishment was put down to, in no particular order, "China", "the China boom", "the mining boom", "a China led-mining boom" and "China's seemingly insatiable appetite for our rocks". Then, one fateful day in May, equities experienced what is politely called a mild correction.
The £1.8bn facility has been out of action since April 2005 when a leak was discovered. Over a thousand jobs depend on the Thorp plant having a future. The Isle of Man government has told the UK's Department of Constitutional Affairs that Thorp should not be allowed to reopen. It says BNG's report into the leak confirms its view that operational safety is vulnerable to mechanical faults and human error. Manx environment minister, John Rimington, said: “Some of the statements in this report really do undermine confidence in the operational safety of Thorp. Metal fatigue and equipment breakdown must occur to some extent in every industrial activity. However, with Thorp, it seems too great a reliance has been placed on rigorous checks on instruments and monitoring equipment to keep the plant safe – there is always the potential for human error.

A key enabler of e-business is security. However, there is a misunderstanding that security is all about IT security protocols. It's not, it is about people and awareness. Small/ medium size organisations and consumers are the most vulnerable groups. In general, they are the least aware of the threats of cyber crime; they have the least knowledge of the basic steps that can be taken to protect themselves and they have the least assistance available to them. You, as managers/owners need to take responsibility for your companys security policy and to increase awareness and education within your business of the threats posed by the internet and the basic steps that can be taken to protect your on-line business - Last year, 67% of companies suffered a virus attack. - Less than 20% of companies carry out security audits.

I LIKE TO keep old books around the house, even though many of them sit on shelves unopened for decades. Occasionally, though, they provide remarkable insights into the past and perspectives on the present. For example, recently I pulled from a shelf a heavy bound volume of The Educational Record for 1950, a quarterly publication of The American Council on Education. A year's subscription was $3, and each issue contained serious scholarly articles like "Higher Education in Postwar Austria." .
Money donated to the Worcester County Humane Society in response to a tragic death in the area last year has eased the life of many canines. Twelve new dog kennels were made possible because of checks sent to the society in memory of Freda Wright-Sorce, wife of Michael Sorce, better known as Don Geronimo on The Don and Mike Show based in the Washington, D.C. area. Wright-Sorce was killed on July 10, 2005, on Route 90 when a 22-year-old man swerved to avoid stopped cars at the traffic signal on Isle of Wight. He hit Wright-Sorce's Lexus head-on. Because Wright-Sorce's family had been longtime supporters of the humane society, family members asked mourners to donate money to the nonprofit rather than send flowers in her memory. The checks poured in in amounts ranging from small to large, and when all were tallied, the humane society had received about $21,000, said Kenille Davies, the society's director.
After 5 months of weekly sessions, the HSBC Manx Youth Games cricket competition took place on Saturday at Cronkbourne. 6 teams took part: Douglas North 1, Douglas North 2, Douglas South, West, North and South. The coaching sessions were taken by ECB qualified coaches from several clubs from around the Island, with clubs taking ownership of particular sessions. An example of this was the South (Castletown) & the North (Ramsey). As in previous years, many of these kids will be playing in the IOMCA U11 league, which is due to start on the 26th May. The standard of the MYG competition was high, and coming into the competition there was no clear favourite. The West, with players of experience from previous years, were identified early as one of the stand out sides, and the consistent Douglas South also shone.
