Stobart Motorsport ready to strike on Jim Clark Rally

Stobart Motorsport are ready to strike on the second round of the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship as the five car strong force looks to the tarmac stages of the Jim Clark Rally with the squad bolstered by stand-in driver Dorian Rees.

Rees, BRC Production Champion in 2004, takes the place of Julian Reynolds who has had to step down from his seat in the Stobart VK Subaru Rally Team for this rally only, due to personal reasons.

"I'm looking forward to making my debut with the Stobart VK Subaru Rally Team," says Rees. "It's an honour to be asked to compete with the team and to line up next to reigning champion Mark Higgins will be quite some challenge."

Rees joins Stobart Motorsports reigning British Rally Champion Mark Higgins who won the Jim Clark Rally last season by 37 seconds on his way to his second BRC title.

"It's a good, challenging event that I have won a couple of times," says Higgins.

Savings Tax Directive Is One Year Old,

It's just a year since the EU Savings Tax Directive swung into action, and IOM-based Derbyshire Offshore says it doesn't seem to have been the disaster for the world of offshore that many predicted.

Introducing a new, higher rate on Derbyshire's Interest Accumulator account, Fiona Passey, Director of Offshore Banking says, 'Whilst the overall impact of the new Directive continues to be far less than expected, this new account gives customers a valuable tax planning option as the interest and tax are deferred for a minimum of two years and then only paid at the customer's request."

The European Savings Tax Directive was introduced a year ago, with the aim of clarifying the position of the taxation of offshore deposit accounts for EU residents. For offshore financial centres such as the Isle of Man, a withholding tax option was introduced for those customers who wanted to preserve the confidentiality of their banking affairs.

GHA at one-day conference

The Chief Executive of the GHA, Dr David McCutcheon and the GHA Finance Director, Mr Ernest Lima, together with the Chief Executive Officers of the Health Services for the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey are meeting in Jersey for a one day Conference. Other senior officers from some of the island jurisdictions are attending also. Last years Conference was held in Gibraltar. The event is taking place in the Education Centre at the Jersey General Hospital. The purpose of the Conference is to share matters of concern which affect all of the jurisdictions health care systems. The major focus this year will be on the implications of the General Medical Councils revalidation and licence to practice regulations for doctors. The regulations were originally drafted for the United Kingdom, that is the NHS, but the GMC have now been made aware that because of the short-sightness of the original draft proposals, the proposed regulations would not fit the four jurisdictions which are not part of the NHS.

TT 2006; SUPERSTOCK RACE REPORT

New Zealander Bruce Anstey continued his dominance of the TT Superstocks when he won the Scottish Life International-sponsored event in the Isle of Man today after one of the most exciting races in the history of the meeting. It was his fifth TT triumph.

Ansteys Suzuki, and the Kawasaki of Ian Hutchinson, had enjoyed a race-long duel with only a few seconds separating them for most of the race until Anstey extended his advantage on the final lap. In fact, Hutchinson who was third in Saturdays Superbike TT - got his nose in front, briefly, on lap three. The final margin of victory was 8.3 seconds with Jason Griffiths, Yamaha, 23 seconds behind Hutchinson in third place.

The start had been delayed for an hour as a result of patches of sea mist but when racing got underway it was last years winner, Bruce Anstey, who swept into the lead.

We love Germany

It’s not just about the football. For the next four weeks, Germany wants desperately to charm the lederhosen off us in every possible way — to persuade the world that it can host a lot more than football tournaments, opera marathons and beer festivals: “You went out on penalties, now come back on holiday.” And, perhaps surprisingly, not everyone needs convincing. Quietly (efficiently?), Germany has become a destination for discerning travellers.

Not, admittedly, in the short term, when men with St George’s crosses creosoted into their chest hair will be doing their best to render the entire nation uninhabitable — but, once the tear gas clears, what will remain is an unfailingly polite, hospitable country, in quiet possession of a handful of genuinely special destinations. A trickle of Brits are already choosing the Bavarian Alps over the money-grubbier French and Italian sections, sampling the vinicultural peace of Franconia ahead of the Loire, even plumping for the quirky chic of the northern coast in summer, rather than the crowds, costs and, well, Germans tarnishing the Med.
