Accounts revealed yesterday that Prince Andrew clocked up £11,555 flying 300 miles from the Isle of Man to St Andrews, Scotland, last September.

The Queen’s chartered flight with Prince Philip to the Commonwealth Games in Australia in March, set us back £279,039.

Smoking ban upheld

A Douglas County District Court judge has again rejected arguments that the city's smoking ban is unconstitutional.

Judge Jack Murphy has issued an order denying a request by Lawrence bar operator Dennis Steffes to suspend the city's smoking ban while he wages a lawsuit alleging that the ban is unconstitutionally vague and illegally oversteps the state's laws.

Murphy had ruled in late December that the smoking ban was constitutional, but Steffes — who operates Coyotes and Last Call — asked the court to reconsider. Murphy again rejected Steffes arguments and said that there was no evidence to support a suspension of the ban, nor was their evidence that the ban was unconstitutionally vague or had overstepped state law.

Macquarie takes punt on bingo

MACQUARIE Bank is understood to be in talks to buy the company behind one of Britain's most profitable bingo clubs for about pound stg. 90 million ($225 million). The acquisitive investment bank, which recently abandoned an attempt to buy the London Stock Exchange, is believed to be one of a handful of parties shortlisted to acquire Thomas Holdings, owner of the Beacon Bingo chain.

It is understood to face competition from Barclays Private Equity and Hermes Private Equity, which are also in the closing stages of the auction.

Hermes already has an interest in the sector.

In April it acquired Mayfair Bingo from Risk Capital Partners, the investment fund controlled by Luke Johnson, the entrepreneur who is chairman of broadcaster Channel Four.

Macquarie has been demonstrating an interest in a wide variety of British assets.

Music, fish and folklore

Trondheim has a classic setting, surrounded by hills and set on the banks of a graceful fjord. For somewhere so far from anywhere else (Oslo is 300 miles south), the city has cosmopolitan credentials, with an impressive cathedral, fetching wooden architecture, excellent museums and a lively student population. Norway's former capital shows its charms best in summer, when barely an hour separates sunset from dawn.

CROWE AND HOPE TAKE SIDECAR HONOURS

Isle of Man pairing Nick Crowe and Darren Hope took victory in the Sidecar A TT race, a repeat of their success last year.

The Manxmen came home 47.11 seconds clear of the field after registering an overall race time of one hour and 27.15 seconds.

Steve Norbury and Scott Parnell were second with John Holden and Andrew Winkle third.

Hope said: "We had to work really hard early in the race to get that win.

"But there were some flags out on the last lap so I think we could have gone even faster but for that."

The race started an hour later than originally planned - at 2.15pm - after mist on the west coast of the island had drifted across the 37.73-mile Mountain Course and delayed the start of the morning's Superstock race by an hour.
