Though Richard Farrell has come to the July 17-18 $600 Great Lakes Open in Rochester after winning what Id called the Philadelphia Summer Open (actually, as Mal Anderson correctly pointed out, it was the Quaker City Open), hes unseeded and unplaced. Consequently, after hes had 5-game trouble in his opener with Canadian Junior Paul Klevinas, hes forced to meet in the 2nd round none other than Errol Resek, one of the favorites to win the tournament. (D-J Lee had entered but didnt show, perhaps becausehis car had been stolen?). Errol has put new rubber on his racket and is hoping to break it in gradually. (As if wife Jairie disapproves, she says to someone, He has other rackets he could use.

The Vacation Manifesto: Radical Ideas to Grow the Quad Cities

Editor's note: Last year, after a European vacation, longtime Renaissance Rock Island leader Dan Carmody submitted a draft of a "Vacation Manifesto" - a series of anecdotes and ideas for the Quad Cities.

In the year since, Carmody left our area for Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he serves as president of the Downtown Improvement District. We recently asked him to revisit his manifesto. Here it is.

We welcome your ideas in the comments section of the article.

City Centre; Manchester, England. People on the street, lots of them. Regardless of the size of the town, pedestrians fill UK city centers in dramatic contrast with most American downtowns, which look as if a neutron bomb had been deployed.

Less reliance on the automobile and more fragmented retailing accounts for much of the difference.

Banker in slave job rap

A BANK boss illegally shipped in immigrants from Africa to build his house — and paid them as little as £1.36 an hour.

Pieter Van Rooyen, 46, founder and head of the Life Church in Douglas on the Isle of Man, paid “slave wages” and did not let the men out alone.

The shamed dad of two resigned from Barclays Bank — where he was a senior manager — the day before his court appearance in Douglas.

He and fellow South African Jacobus Frederick Visser, 43, an illegal immigrant, admitted providing travel and false documents for the men.

Van Rooyen faked an invitation for the five workers and Visser, claiming they would take part in a business management course.

Prosecutor Stuart Neale said Van Rooyen wanted his house in Onchan renovated on the “cheap”.

Harbor Master: The Rebirth Of a Classic Racing Yacht

LA SPEZIA, Italy -- It's 4 a.m. and Dutchman Johan van den Bruele is wide awake. He's been looking forward to this day for five years, ever since he first saw Lulworth in a Ligurian boatyard looking like a decomposed whale, but one with great bones. On this clear April morning, the classic racing yacht from the 1920s is shimmering in the water, and Mr. van den Bruele is going sailing. "It's fantastic," he says. "Especially after four and a half years in a shipyard."

Mr. van den Bruele built his first boat, a small dinghy, at age 10 with ...

TT2006 ends on terrific high for Uel Duncan Racing pt 1

Australian ace Cameron Donald ensured the 2006 Isle of Man TT Races ended on a high note for the Uel Duncan Racing team when he finished in a sensational second place in the final event of the week, the Senior TT. The 27-year old also put in a lap of 128.445mph to become the third fastest rider ever to have lapped the Mountain Circuit, a staggering performance in what was only his second appearance at the world famous venue. It completed an excellent week for Donald who also finished in the top five in the Superbike and Supersport races. It was a tougher fortnight for the other member of the team, Les Shand, as he fought back from a broken collarbone sustained at the North West 200, just two weeks before the TT. The world's most difficult course is tough at the best of times never mind when injured but Les put in a professional performance over the two weeks and fiinished three of his races, picking up two bronze replicas along the way, ensuring further representation for Uel Duncan Racing.

Manx heritage exhibition to open

A new exhibition about what it means to make the Isle of Man home is opening at the Manx Museum.

The exhibition is the work of American Mary Modeen, who was the artist in residence at Cragneash last summer.

She spoke to Manx residents and visitors during this time to find out how they felt about the island.

The show is accompanied by the Healing Earth installation - three large sculptures, which signify acupuncture needles, placed at heritage sites.

They are placed at The Grove at Ramsey, Laxey Wheel and at Niarbyl Cafe.

'New and exciting'

Yvonne Cresswell, curator of social history for Manx National Heritage and co-ordinator of the exhibition, said: "The exhibition is not just Mary Modeen's personal exploration and thoughts about the concept of 'home' and 'belonging'.

UK. Ebel runs like clockwork to take first win in Honda F4S ...

Crowds gathered for the opening round of the HF4S Powerboat Series this weekend which took place in Douglas Bay on the Isle of Man (Saturday 24 June 2006). Kicking off with the 150hp championship, Ebels Graham Foster-Vigors and Mick Horsfall took top honours after a nail-biting 9 laps, which saw Ebel setting the standard, holding off stiff competition from Delmar Flooring and Quality Job. Premier Cru had the best start, maintaining an early lead for the first part of the race. But Ebel were close behind and settling into a comfortable rhythm. Foster-Vigors said: We had a cracking start run and just kept our eyes on the start boat, slotting into second before the first turn. We had a fantastic racing line and managed to overtake Premier Cru in the rougher water around turns five and six. We put a lot of work in on the boat pre-season and it paid off Once passed, Ebel quickly built up a comfortable lead, finishing six seconds ahead of Premier Cru in second place.
