Honours for Northern Ireland Bike Aces Robert and Joey Dunlop

For many years, the Dunlop brothers dominated motorcycle racing in Northern Ireland. For over a quarter of a century they competed regularly at the North-West 200 which includes University corner.

They remain two of the most successful riders ever to compete in this road race.

Robert holds the record for the course, with Joey second, one race behind.

The brothers also rode successfully at courses further afield, most notably at the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Joey remains one of the most successful riders ever to compete at the islands races. He also rode extensively in eastern Europe, where he lost his life in a tragic accident in 2000.

The Dunlop brothers will each be awarded the degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv), in recognition of their excellence in the field of motorcycle racing and for services to charity.

The word from the TT on last night's practice sessions;

Highlight of Wednesday nights practice session in the Isle of Man TT meeting was not one, but two, unofficial lap records. First of all came news of a lap at 127.81 miles an hour by John McGuinness, breaking unofficially his own outright record of 127.68 set up two years ago. His Superbike Honda stopped the clock at 17 minutes 42.73 seconds on his second circuit of the night.

Not to be outdone, the sidecar crew of Dave Molyneux and Craig Hallam also weighed in with an unofficial record lap. Their speed of 116.224 broke Molyneuxs fastest sidecar lap which he set up, in last years race, with Dan Sayle.

Earlier, Guy Martin got the solo practice off to a scorching start when he recorded the fastest time of the week, up to that point. His lap of 18 minutes 2.48 seconds represented a speed of 125.477 miles an hour, while Ian Lougher (125.390) and John McGuinness (124.996) were close behind.

Slow Foodies welcome heritage breed to Napa

"I got in some commercial pork belly and I got these in at the same time and cooked them side by side, and it's much better flavor, more fat, and more distinctive flavor," Scargle said."It has more levels of flavor going on than just the normal commercial grade that you might get.""This is the genesis"Blissfully unaware that their relatives were on the menu, the little red pigs at last Friday's party won't wind up in a dish themselves: They were brought to Napa from their Kansas birthplace to become the Eve and Adam of the first Red Wattle Pig family west of Texas."This is the genesis of the Red Wattle pig in California," said Pahk, who has been buying Red Wattle meat from Martins' Heritage Food USA for about two years. The two men had never met until last Friday, but over the phone they developed "a vision, seven, eight months ago, that we would bring the Red Wattle to California, particularly Silverado," Pahk said."I gave him the ending point and I said Patrick, you make up the rest."Martins decided to take the pigs on tour, complete with a documentary film crew.

Parkinson bids to win over States members

THE deputy Treasury minister will make a last-ditch attempt this week to convince States members of the merits of his zero-20 tax proposals. Deputy Charles Parkinson confirmed that he would place nine amendments to the corporate tax reform debate at the end of June.
He remains confident that zero-20 would be better than the Policy Councils favoured zero-10 option.
He said he was optimistic of success and confident of compliance with the European Union Code of Conduct on Business Taxation.
Deputy Parkinson has invited all States members to a presentation tomorrow and on Friday to learn about them.
I wont really know how much support I have until meeting deputies in the next two days but I know a number will support them, he said.
Clearly there are some who will not under any circumstances, but I will have a better idea by Friday.

THE SMACKDOWN REPORT FROM CANADA

Okay, life here is back to normal. My apologies for my meager reporting last week and the no-port the week before. Im really bummed about not getting ECW up here yet, but after hearing about Tuesday's show, maybe its a blessing. Okay, on to the show.

Miz introduces Smackdown from the audience and announces Booker vs. Lashley and Rey Mysterio vs. Gregory Helms.

JBLs music hits and he makes his usual entrance via limo. Cole calls the entrance and appears to be working alone. JBL is in his suit and has a mic in hand. He claims to be Mr. Ratings and just as hes about to take a seat, Rey Mysterios music hits. JBL slaps on a headset and gets to work. He proceeds to rip on Rey. Im very curious to hear how JBL does. JBL takes off his headset and is about to enter the ring but Cole advises against it saying if he does anything stupid hell lose this job too.

King Arthur

WHAT A witty, whimsical, mesmerising and meltingly beautiful entertainment the American choreographer Mark Morris has made of Henry Purcell’s semi-opera. It’s a village fête, a seaside show and a surreal pageant of British eccentrics from all eras and many mythologies, rolled into one and done with winning grace.

And how audaciously Morris has refurbished this bizarre Baroque hybrid for our impatient century. Try staging King Arthur as it was done in 1691 — a sprawling historical play by Dryden, intermittently spiced with Purcell’s music — and you would end up with a four-hour show, involving parallel casts of actors and singers, costing millions (just what Covent Garden did in the 1990s).

Caring for children with complex health needs

Children with learning disabilities and complex health needs are now surviving to adulthood due to clinical advancement (Burr, 2000). This has resulted in families taking on the additional responsibilities of care for their disabled child. Burr (2000) established that the 'trend in care has shifted from institutions to the child's home, placing considerable responsibility, work and expense on the family'. The government paper Saving Lives (DoH, 1999) recognises this shift and advocates that community nurses play a crucial part within the scope of public health in maintaining the well being of children and their families. Therefore, effective planning for continuing care needs is crucial (Muir & Dryden, 2000) and will ensure improving life chances for children as recommended within the government's papers Valuing People (DoH, 2001), Every Child Matters (DoH, 2003) and Getting the right start (DoH, 2003) and keeping within public health targets.

Incwala stakes Lonmin Limpopo

Johannesburg - World number three platinum miner Lonmin (LON) on Friday announced the inclusion of its black economic empowerment (BEE) partner Incwala Resources as an 18% shareholder in Lonmin Platinum Limpopo.

Following an internal restructuring, Western Platinum, in which Incwala has an 18% stake, has acquired Messina the owner of the Limpopo mine.

As part of the restructuring, Western Platinum has signed a seven-year $300m facility to finance the acquisition and refinance the debt in Messina, Lonmin said.

The new facility was provided by a syndicate of local and international banks including: Barclays Bank, Calyon Corporate and Investment Bank, HSBC Bank, Lloyds TSB Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Standard Finance (Isle of Man).

"This facility will replace the acquisition facility at the Lonmin Plc level used for the purchase of Southern Platinum and is in line with Lonmin's strategy of keeping the group's debt at the cash generating operational level," Lonmin said.
