Many patriotic Americans do not realize what the failed "flag-burning amendment" would have done. The proposed amendment would actually have banned desecration of the American flag. Here are some highlights from United States Code Title 4, Chapter 1: Sec. 7(b): ... When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right [front] fender. Sec. 8(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. Sec. 8(i). The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. (This is already punishable in Washington, D.C., by $100 fine or 30 days in jail.) These rules don't come from the Boy Scout Handbook, or even army regulations, but the 77th U.S. Congress.
JACK McConnell launched a stinging attack on the BBC and ITV last night for being too biased in favour of England in their World Cup coverage. The First Minister accused the broadcasters of "forgetting they are supposed to represent the whole of the country" and said he hoped they would produce more balanced coverage in the future. .
The Metropolitan Governor of Tokyo, Shiin Taro Ishihara, along with the Mayors of two islands off the coast of Japan, Miyakejima Island and Hachijojima Island, and officials from Tokyo visited the Isle of Man last week. Because the Isle of Man is acknowledged as the Worlds road racing capital, a strong entourage arrived at the start of TT practice week primarily to investigate the possibility of staging motorcycle road race events on one of the Japanese islands. The delegation arrived in Castletown for a whistle stop tour and were welcomed by the Hon Tony Brown MHK SHK and Tony Mansell, Chairman of Castletown Commissioners. They were taken to the Billown circuit to look at the pre TT classic event and met with representatives of the Southern MCC before having a quick trip around the course.
After 5 months of weekly sessions, the HSBC Manx Youth Games cricket competition took place on Saturday at Cronkbourne. 6 teams took part: Douglas North 1, Douglas North 2, Douglas South, West, North and South. The coaching sessions were taken by ECB qualified coaches from several clubs from around the Island, with clubs taking ownership of particular sessions. An example of this was the South (Castletown) & the North (Ramsey). As in previous years, many of these kids will be playing in the IOMCA U11 league, which is due to start on the 26th May. The standard of the MYG competition was high, and coming into the competition there was no clear favourite. The West, with players of experience from previous years, were identified early as one of the stand out sides, and the consistent Douglas South also shone.
I have recently returned from the TT at the Isle of Man and I believe there are interesting parallels to the way Manx police handle the situation and the way the PSNI handle a similar situation at the North West 200. At night in Douglas the Manx police are out on foot, wandering through the crowds and speaking to the visitors. They are known for their friendly attitude and mingle freely. I was in a restaurant on the promenade and a constable came in and went round the tables, passing the time of day and chatting. This is not to say that they have a soft attitude to policing. When someone goes too far, they are known for their swift action. Contrast this with the North West 200 - boiler-suited men in the back of armoured cars, scowling at the people as they pass.
John McGuinness was back out in action on Sunday at Snetterton, Norfolk for round 5 of the National Superstock Championship and the Morecambe rider rode a solid race to claim a hard fought ninth place. Fresh from his Isle of Man TT success it was back to the cut and thrust of the short circuits and with less than a second separating the top 20 in practice, it was certainly hectic stuff. The high speed 1.952-mile circuit was always going to produce close racing and John found himself in 13th place after Friday's opening qualifying session with a time of 1m09.315s. With hot and humid conditions over the course of the weekend tyre wear was causing concern and a number of riders fell during final qualifying. The stop-start nature of the session meant that John was unable to improve upon his time and he was relegated to 16th, for the final spot on the fourth row.
