A key enabler of e-business is security. However, there is a misunderstanding that security is all about IT security protocols. It's not, it is about people and awareness. Small/ medium size organisations and consumers are the most vulnerable groups. In general, they are the least aware of the threats of cyber crime; they have the least knowledge of the basic steps that can be taken to protect themselves and they have the least assistance available to them. You, as managers/owners need to take responsibility for your companys security policy and to increase awareness and education within your business of the threats posed by the internet and the basic steps that can be taken to protect your on-line business - Last year, 67% of companies suffered a virus attack. - Less than 20% of companies carry out security audits.
AN ALTERNATIVE tax plan for Guernsey could be scuppered by the UK Government or other EU states. Chief Minister Laurie Morgan wrote to all States members last night to explain the outcome of top level talks with Government officials over the last few days. He and Treasury minister Lyndon Trott met senior UK Treasury officials to get final backing for their zero-10 plans. And while Whitehall officials confirmed that the States zero-10 proposals would be compliant with the EU Code of Conduct on business taxation and would be supported by the Government, it emerged that Deputy Parkinsons zero-20 alternative might not. We are equally confident that the UK Government would have considerable difficulty in being able to support Deputy Parkinsons proposals, said Deputy Morgan. Furthermore we are in absolutely no doubt that such proposals will be challenged by other EU member states.
JACK McConnell launched a stinging attack on the BBC and ITV last night for being too biased in favour of England in their World Cup coverage. The First Minister accused the broadcasters of "forgetting they are supposed to represent the whole of the country" and said he hoped they would produce more balanced coverage in the future. .
Once upon a time, Miller Pope lived the life of The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. "We called it The Uniform," Pope said, shaking his head ruefully over a Diet Coke in Ocean Isle Beach. "Oxford shirt, button-down collar, regimental tie." Every work day - like Gregory Peck in the movie - Pope would don his full dress and take the train from Westport, Conn., to Manhattan. There, he made a living as one of New York's top illustrators, creating covers and inside sketches for such magazines as The Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, Redbook, Reader's Digest and Saga. He also did artwork for major ad agencies and helped design the illustrations and graphics for Addison-Wesley textbooks. He'd have lunch with fellow artists such as Rube Goldberg and Mort Walker, the creator of Beetle Bailey.
Onscreen, she was romanced by Errol Flynn, James Cagney, Leslie Howard, Charles Boyer, Henry Fonda, Montgomery Clift, Richard Burton and Robert Mitchum. In life, she was perhaps the great love in the turbulent career of John Huston. She was responsible for the decisive legal action that freed contract players from their seven-year sentences (with time added on for defiant behavior). She won two Oscars and was nominated for three others. She also makes the quite preposterous claim that on July 1 she will turn 90. Why preposterous? Because Olivia de Havilland is as alert, quick-witted, good-natured, funny and attractive as many people half her age. “Where shall we do the interview?" I ask. “I want you to be comfortable," she says. “And I want the same for you," I tell her.
Jack White's boy band the Raconteurs have announced a whopping one-date American tour, which will begin and end on April 7 at New York City's Irving Plaza. Whoa, slow down! You don't want to overexert yourself, man. The show will be the White/Brendan Benson/Greenhornes supergroup's first American appearance. It follows a brief string of UK dates, including a gig in Scotland which White allegedly played dressed in full Scottish regalia, kilt and all. Tailing the Raconteurs' big stateside debut by, oh, four months, is a stop at Lollapalooza 2006. This is the big time: 04-07 New York, NY - Irving Plaza 08-04 Chicago, IL - Grant Park (Lollapalooza) Both shows will be in support of the Raconteurs' debut album Broken Boy Soldiers, slated to hit shelves May 16 via Third Man Records/V2 in both CD and deluxe gatefold vinyl formats.
