Senior disappointment for Finnegan

Martin Finnegan had a disappointing end to his 2006 Isle of Man TT when he was forced to retire on the fourth lap of Friday's Senior TT. The Klaffi Honda/Alpha Boilers rider was holding on to a strong 6th place at mid-race distance but the exhaust of the Honda Fireblade had cracked and he was black flagged at Ballacraine and his race was over. With conditions absolutely perfect and the Island lapping up the glorious weather, Martin blasted off the line and after the first 9 miles he found himself in 7th spot, just adrift of eventual third placed finisher Bruce Anstey. The team had worked hard after the opening Superbike race and with Ian Hutchinson retiring, Martin's opening lap of 124.595mph placed him in 6th, six seconds behind Anstey but three ahead of Carl Rennie and Paul Hunt. Like most of the other competitors, Martin went quicker on the second lap and a speed of 125.806mph, his fastest of all race week, maintained his position.

Aaron Spelling (1923 - 2006)

Danny Thomas, Spelling formed Thomas/Spelling Prods., which produced the 1967 Western series "The Guns of Will Sonnet" and "The Mod Squad," starring Michael Cole, Peggy Lipton and Clarence Williams III. During its five year run, "The Mod Squad" earned six Emmy nominations, including one for outstanding dramatic series of the 1969-70 season.

In 1971, Spelling formed a partnership with Leonard Goldberg, and together they entered a phenomenally prolific period, producing many top-rated TV series, including "Charlie's Angels," "Starsky and Hutch," "Fantasy Island," "Hart to Hart" and "Family." During the late '80s, Spelling's company also moved into theatrical films, producing such diverse fare as "Mr. Mom," starring Michael Keaton as a harried househusband, as well as the drama "'Night Mother," which starred Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft.

Look back for anger

This week's number one single by Sandi Thom paints a wistful, nostalgic picture of the late-1960s and late-1970s. But what do today's twenty-somethings really know about these eras?

"Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair, In '77 and '69 revolution was in the air," sings Sandi Thom in her nostalgic chart-topper - extolling the virtues of the rebellious days of punk rock and the psychedelic Sixties.

In her musical history lesson, these glorious days were before pop music became an accountancy exercise and youth culture became an extension of corporate branding.

But what do today's young people really know about these years? And what is it that gives them such an appeal? Is it just viewing the past through Che-tinted glasses?

Love, peace and three TV channels

In 1969, Britain's most high-profile example of student radicalism was the London School of Economics - with the university being shut down for three weeks after demonstrations and dozens of arrests.

Caution flags steal show

Cross did a good job avoiding the wall and getting her car back on the track, but she fell to fifth on the miscue and couldn't regain any ground.

Vaughn inherited the lead and cruised to the win, his second in as many weeks.

Memorial donations aid county Humane Society

Money donated to the Worcester County Humane Society in response to a tragic death in the area last year has eased the life of many canines.

Twelve new dog kennels were made possible because of checks sent to the society in memory of Freda Wright-Sorce, wife of Michael Sorce, better known as Don Geronimo on The Don and Mike Show based in the Washington, D.C. area. Wright-Sorce was killed on July 10, 2005, on Route 90 when a 22-year-old man swerved to avoid stopped cars at the traffic signal on Isle of Wight. He hit Wright-Sorce's Lexus head-on.

Because Wright-Sorce's family had been longtime supporters of the humane society, family members asked mourners to donate money to the nonprofit rather than send flowers in her memory. The checks poured in in amounts ranging from small to large, and when all were tallied, the humane society had received about $21,000, said Kenille Davies, the society's director.
