The new face of addiction

Britain is to get a new Class A drug, it was announced this week. Methylamphetamine, more commonly known as crystal meth, is to join the toughest category of illegal drugs after a recommendation by a government committee. Possessing it could soon land users in jail for seven years. Dealers might get life.

Meth might not yet be a household name in the UK, but it has wreaked havoc in America, and senior police officers caution that it may be mainstream here within two years. British newspapers are already describing it as a “creeping menace” that is “more deadly than crack”. Beyond the fear and media rhetoric, how worried should we be? A growing band of British users already knows the effects of crystal meth, a powerful stimulant that can be smoked, swallowed, snorted or injected. “Richard”, a 29-year-old professional from London, has smoked it twice.

Snow Patrol Cancel US Tour

Sad news for Snow Patrol fans; after some fitful stops and starts, the band have called time on their North American tour. Singer Gary Lightbodys throat condition has not improved, and the band have decided to cancel the current tour in favor of rescheduling the dates to allow his voice to recover fully.

Lightbody left the following message via the bands Myspace:

I saw the doctor again yesterday afternoon. The news is bad. My vocal chords dont seem to have heeled at all. The polyps are still there and my singing voice is extremely weak. Whats new? I hear from cheap seats. Indeed.

Im so sorry about this but Ive been advised by the doctor to not do any shows for a month. I may also need surgery but the initial suggestion from the doc is for me to rest at home for that time and see how I am in a few weeks.

Jailed Tanner's losses: Game, set, match . . . family

When Roscoe Tanner's letter arrived earlier this year from a northern Florida prison, there was no apology. The future, Department of Corrections Inmate No. R35415 wrote, is "in God's hands."

Daughter Tamara and her mother, Charlotte -- the second of three Mrs. Tanners -- were furious.

This, Tamara said, is what she wrote back: "Once again, when it's time to take care of your responsibilities, you put it off on something else. Dad, when are you going to step up to the plate?"

In an interview from her home in Aliso Viejo, Calif., an Orange County suburb, Roscoe Tanner's daughter said, "He's a charmer who will say whatever he needs to get what he wants. I don't care to hear anything he has to say."

Tamara grew up exceptionally close to her father.
