Feature: Noughts and crosses

As World Cup Fever grips the nation, it seems a St George's Cross plastered onto any product you care to mention, from toilet seats to England hoodies for dogs (yes dogs!), allows the seller to add a nought to the price and several to the volume sold - but who owns the England 'brand'? .

Mandating protections?

Many patriotic Americans do not realize what the failed "flag-burning amendment" would have done. The proposed amendment would actually have banned desecration of the American flag.

Here are some highlights from United States Code Title 4, Chapter 1: Sec. 7(b): ... When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right [front] fender.

Sec. 8(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. Sec. 8(i). The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. (This is already punishable in Washington, D.C., by $100 fine or 30 days in jail.)

These rules don't come from the Boy Scout Handbook, or even army regulations, but the 77th U.S. Congress.

TT 2006; SUPERSTOCK RACE REPORT

New Zealander Bruce Anstey continued his dominance of the TT Superstocks when he won the Scottish Life International-sponsored event in the Isle of Man today after one of the most exciting races in the history of the meeting. It was his fifth TT triumph.

Ansteys Suzuki, and the Kawasaki of Ian Hutchinson, had enjoyed a race-long duel with only a few seconds separating them for most of the race until Anstey extended his advantage on the final lap. In fact, Hutchinson who was third in Saturdays Superbike TT - got his nose in front, briefly, on lap three. The final margin of victory was 8.3 seconds with Jason Griffiths, Yamaha, 23 seconds behind Hutchinson in third place.

The start had been delayed for an hour as a result of patches of sea mist but when racing got underway it was last years winner, Bruce Anstey, who swept into the lead.

Retiree Wins Record Slot Jackpot

BILOXI, Mississippi – (PRESS RELEASE) -- A 65-year-old retiree visiting the Isle of Capri Casino in Biloxi hit a $12.4 million statewide MegaJackpot(R) while playing a popular Wheel of Fortune(R) $1 slot machine Thursday evening, and in doing so, the winner -- who wishes to remain anonymous -- set a world record for this particular slot system.

"This is the first time I have ever played a Wheel of Fortune(R) slot machine," said the stunned winner after IGT technicians and Mississippi State Gaming officials verified the jackpot. "I visit the Isle of Capri several times every year, but usually blackjack is my game."

From the Isle of Capri Casino's perspective, the world record MegaJackpot(R) gives a huge boost to the Gulf Coast and its gaming destinations, which are still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina 10 months ago.

Weber County officials respond to mock earthquake emergency

MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE -- The city council and mayor convened an "emergency" meeting Tuesday morning to respond to a mock earthquake.

While city and county leaders discussed how to respond to a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in Weber County, dozens of volunteer victims were outside the city offices with everything from fake bruises to fake disembowelments.

Emergency responders used a Utah Transit Authority bus and several Army Humvees to take the wounded to the Army Reserve's 328th Combat Support Hospital, currently set up for training in Business Depot Ogden.

The Moores take on Manhattan

So it only took the Moore brothers, Greg and David, a mere 15 years to travel from a Camden hooch emporium to a handsome 1840s townhouse bordering Gramercy Park, 100 miles yet several worlds away.

The Camden wine adventure, housed in the musty cellar of a half-pint specialty shop, Triangle Liquor, was run by David for five years beginning in 1991. Greg still served as general manager and sommelier at Le Bec-Fin, where David had worked as sommelier at lunch.

In 1996, Moore Brothers Wine Co. opened in Pennsauken. The Wilmington location debuted three years later, and was named Food & Wine's best new wine shop. The brothers' emphasis, then and now, is wine produced by European families at comfortable prices. The new shop carries 280 facings (that is, labels) from 110 producers, ranging in price from $9 to $150, with $17 being the average.

Smoking ban upheld

A Douglas County District Court judge has again rejected arguments that the city's smoking ban is unconstitutional.

Judge Jack Murphy has issued an order denying a request by Lawrence bar operator Dennis Steffes to suspend the city's smoking ban while he wages a lawsuit alleging that the ban is unconstitutionally vague and illegally oversteps the state's laws.

Murphy had ruled in late December that the smoking ban was constitutional, but Steffes — who operates Coyotes and Last Call — asked the court to reconsider. Murphy again rejected Steffes arguments and said that there was no evidence to support a suspension of the ban, nor was their evidence that the ban was unconstitutionally vague or had overstepped state law.
