DTI Offer FREE 2 day Internet Security Courses for Small Businesses

A key enabler of e-business is security. However, there is a misunderstanding that security is all about IT security protocols. It's not, it is about people and awareness. Small/ medium size organisations and consumers are the most vulnerable groups. In general, they are the least aware of the threats of cyber crime; they have the least knowledge of the basic steps that can be taken to protect themselves and they have the least assistance available to them. You, as managers/owners need to take responsibility for your companys security policy and to increase awareness and education within your business of the threats posed by the internet and the basic steps that can be taken to protect your on-line business - Last year, 67% of companies suffered a virus attack. - Less than 20% of companies carry out security audits.

Jailed Tanner's losses: Game, set, match . . . family

When Roscoe Tanner's letter arrived earlier this year from a northern Florida prison, there was no apology. The future, Department of Corrections Inmate No. R35415 wrote, is "in God's hands."

Daughter Tamara and her mother, Charlotte -- the second of three Mrs. Tanners -- were furious.

This, Tamara said, is what she wrote back: "Once again, when it's time to take care of your responsibilities, you put it off on something else. Dad, when are you going to step up to the plate?"

In an interview from her home in Aliso Viejo, Calif., an Orange County suburb, Roscoe Tanner's daughter said, "He's a charmer who will say whatever he needs to get what he wants. I don't care to hear anything he has to say."

Tamara grew up exceptionally close to her father.

The Moores take on Manhattan

So it only took the Moore brothers, Greg and David, a mere 15 years to travel from a Camden hooch emporium to a handsome 1840s townhouse bordering Gramercy Park, 100 miles yet several worlds away.

The Camden wine adventure, housed in the musty cellar of a half-pint specialty shop, Triangle Liquor, was run by David for five years beginning in 1991. Greg still served as general manager and sommelier at Le Bec-Fin, where David had worked as sommelier at lunch.

In 1996, Moore Brothers Wine Co. opened in Pennsauken. The Wilmington location debuted three years later, and was named Food & Wine's best new wine shop. The brothers' emphasis, then and now, is wine produced by European families at comfortable prices. The new shop carries 280 facings (that is, labels) from 110 producers, ranging in price from $9 to $150, with $17 being the average.

News Digests - 6-28-2006

OCEAN CITY - Ocean City police officers pulled two unidentified men from the surf June 25 about 7:30 p.m. Called to the Eighth Street beach here along with firefighters, police saw the two men in the water and in distress. Using floatation devices and a tether rope, three officers went into the water and managed to pull the men to safety. The swimmers had scrapes and cuts on their legs and stomachs from being forced against a drainage pipe by the rough surf and a rip current. They were evaluated at the scene and did not need medical treatment.

Later Guards Earlier
OCEAN CITY - City council approved extended lifeguard hours at the Eighth, Ninth and 12th street beaches starting last weekend. In the past, July 4 was the normal start for the extended hours on Friday and Saturdays, which keep guards on the beach until 7 p.m.

The steady hand

Imagine that you have been working in a big organisation for 37 years when something goes badly wrong at the top. You are plucked from a position a few rungs down the management hierarchy, where you have been delivering good results at regional level. You suddenly become chief executive, responsible for the employment of 1.4 million people and the wellbeing of more than 50 million customers. If you make a hash of your decisions, there may be fatal consequences for users of your services - and for the organisation you lead.

That is what life has been like over the past 100 days for Sir Ian Carruthers, acting chief executive of the NHS in England since the sudden resignation of Sir Nigel Crisp in March. We have heard a lot during this period from his political boss, health secretary Patricia Hewitt, but little from Carruthers, who runs the organisation.

Gevernor of Tokyo Visits Isle of Man

The Metropolitan Governor of Tokyo, Shiin Taro Ishihara, along with the Mayors of two islands off the coast of Japan, Miyakejima Island and Hachijojima Island, and officials from Tokyo visited the Isle of Man last week. Because the Isle of Man is acknowledged as the Worlds road racing capital, a strong entourage arrived at the start of TT practice week primarily to investigate the possibility of staging motorcycle road race events on one of the Japanese islands. The delegation arrived in Castletown for a whistle stop tour and were welcomed by the Hon Tony Brown MHK SHK and Tony Mansell, Chairman of Castletown Commissioners. They were taken to the Billown circuit to look at the pre TT classic event and met with representatives of the Southern MCC before having a quick trip around the course.
