Bringing the news through music

VAIL - It wasn't until coming to the United States that Keith Roberts, lead singer for the Celtic rock band Young Dubliners, connected with his Irish musical roots.

"Growing up in Ireland I was far more exposed to English rock and American stuff," Roberts said. "Irish music was for the old guys in the pub. But when you leave Ireland, homesickness comes out in different ways." Missing home, he said he began singing Irish ballads in bars, something he'd never done before.

Roberts' plan before leaving Dublin was to take his degrees in politics and sociology from University College Dublin and become a journalist. He said after his arrival in the late 80s he quickly learned through an internship at PBS it wasn't the right calling for him. He did, however, find another way to bring the news as he saw it to the public.

Rennie Finishes In Top Ten In Both Isle Of Man TT Superbike Races

Hawk Kawasaki rider Carl Rennie had a fantastic week at the Isle of Man TT achieving some great results for the Hawk Team. The 36-year-old shone in the two Superbike races scoring a seventh and sixth place respectively and gaining a 17th and 14th position in the Supersport and Superstock races. The Lancashire based rider had a near perfect week despite losing his gear lever in the Supersport Junior TT forcing him to lose a number of places and relegating him the 17th position, his worst result of the week. Rennie pulled out all the stops in the Superbike races, competing on the 04 ZX10. The bike which took John McGuinness to runner-up place at the 2004 Ulster GP and also the same machine which took Scott Smart to his maiden victory at the British Superbike race at Mondello Park. Rennie's fastest lap time was an average speed of 124.876mph, which puts him the 13th fastest rider in the history of the TT, faster than TT legends such as Joey Dunlop, Jim Moodie and Phil McCallen.

HSBC Manx Youth Games

After 5 months of weekly sessions, the HSBC Manx Youth Games cricket competition took place on Saturday at Cronkbourne. 6 teams took part: Douglas North 1, Douglas North 2, Douglas South, West, North and South. The coaching sessions were taken by ECB qualified coaches from several clubs from around the Island, with clubs taking ownership of particular sessions. An example of this was the South (Castletown) & the North (Ramsey). As in previous years, many of these kids will be playing in the IOMCA U11 league, which is due to start on the 26th May.

The standard of the MYG competition was high, and coming into the competition there was no clear favourite. The West, with players of experience from previous years, were identified early as one of the stand out sides, and the consistent Douglas South also shone.

Plane ruckus only passenger 'paranoia,' says lawyer

A 37-year-old man who allegedly rushed the cockpit of a Northwestern flight bound for Hawaii and threatened to kill a 3-month-old infant on board had no intention of interfering with the flight crew or harming anyone, his attorney said.

Santiago Lol Tizol, a Guatemalan who has been working in the United States legally and was headed here to work, went on trial yesterday before U.S. District Judge Michael Seabright. He is charged with interfering with a flight crew by assault and intimidation, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison.

"Things that are charged in this case did not occur on this flight," said Assistant Federal Defender Matthew Winters as the trial opened. What happened on board Flight 91 on Dec. 9, 2005, stemmed from paranoia by the passengers who disregarded the decision of the chief flight attendant and decided to take matters into their own hands, he said.

Cuban Soap Opera Sparks Debate

Once persecuted, then excluded, and finally tolerated, Cuban homosexuals have seen the debate on sexual diversity expand in recent weeks as a state-sponsored soap opera featuring some gay characters has riveted the nation.

In a recent episode of "La Cara Oculta de la Luna," or the "Dark Side of the Moon," Yasel, who is married and the father of a little girl, is as surprised as viewers are to discover he is physically attracted to another man, named Mario.

The attraction leads to a sexual relationship and Yasel's subsequent contraction of the HIV virus that causes AIDS.

The series on state television is intended to educate Cubans about AIDS by telling the stories of those with the virus.

But it also has sparked a more open debate about homosexuality in a society where macho attitudes persist.

The best of British fests

At £1 a ticket, the 1,500 revellers who rambled down to Somerset in 1970 for a shambolic festival organised by a young farmer called Michael Eavis got a bargain. Not only did they watch T Rex and drink free milk from the farm’s dairy herd, ever since, they have had the priceless privilege of being able to brag: “I was at the first-ever Glastonbury.”

Over the past three decades, the legends that have sprung up around the festival are such that Eavis’s decision to give himself and his cattle a sabbatical this year leaves a hole in festivalgoers’ summer calendars. Other huge events offer impressive line-ups — Radiohead and Morrissey at V festival, or Franz Ferdinand at the Carling Weekend in Leeds and Reading, for instance — but away from the stages, they lack the atmosphere that is the basis of the best festival tales.

The Vacation Manifesto: Radical Ideas to Grow the Quad Cities

Editor's note: Last year, after a European vacation, longtime Renaissance Rock Island leader Dan Carmody submitted a draft of a "Vacation Manifesto" - a series of anecdotes and ideas for the Quad Cities.

In the year since, Carmody left our area for Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he serves as president of the Downtown Improvement District. We recently asked him to revisit his manifesto. Here it is.

We welcome your ideas in the comments section of the article.

City Centre; Manchester, England. People on the street, lots of them. Regardless of the size of the town, pedestrians fill UK city centers in dramatic contrast with most American downtowns, which look as if a neutron bomb had been deployed.

Less reliance on the automobile and more fragmented retailing accounts for much of the difference.

Newcomer Cameron Donald takes Skerries by Storm

Australian Cameron Donald, came to the Skerries Road Races, saw and conquered, taking two victories and a second place on his debut ride around the most famous of the Southern Irish Road Races. The Uel Duncan Racing Team rider opened his account with a start to finish victory in the M & M Plastering Irish Open Championship Race over local favourite Martin Finnegan, with Raymond Porter taking third. In the Malting's House 600cc race, the likeable Aussie was pipped to the post by Porter by a mere 4/10th's of a second, with Finnegan third. Cameron wrapped up day with a convincing 4-second advantage over Martin Finnegan in the Des DArcy Grand Final, where Raymond Porter took third. Darran Lindsay took the 250cc race honours as Robert Dunlop took the 125cc race victory. In the Duke Road Race Rankings, current leader Ian Lougher is still ahead, although his points advantage has been severely cut back to just 16 points as Cameron Donald moves into second place demoting Kiwi Bruce Anstey to third.

THE SMACKDOWN REPORT FROM CANADA

Okay, life here is back to normal. My apologies for my meager reporting last week and the no-port the week before. Im really bummed about not getting ECW up here yet, but after hearing about Tuesday's show, maybe its a blessing. Okay, on to the show.

Miz introduces Smackdown from the audience and announces Booker vs. Lashley and Rey Mysterio vs. Gregory Helms.

JBLs music hits and he makes his usual entrance via limo. Cole calls the entrance and appears to be working alone. JBL is in his suit and has a mic in hand. He claims to be Mr. Ratings and just as hes about to take a seat, Rey Mysterios music hits. JBL slaps on a headset and gets to work. He proceeds to rip on Rey. Im very curious to hear how JBL does. JBL takes off his headset and is about to enter the ring but Cole advises against it saying if he does anything stupid hell lose this job too.
