Snow Patrol Cancel US Tour

Sad news for Snow Patrol fans; after some fitful stops and starts, the band have called time on their North American tour. Singer Gary Lightbodys throat condition has not improved, and the band have decided to cancel the current tour in favor of rescheduling the dates to allow his voice to recover fully.

Lightbody left the following message via the bands Myspace:

I saw the doctor again yesterday afternoon. The news is bad. My vocal chords dont seem to have heeled at all. The polyps are still there and my singing voice is extremely weak. Whats new? I hear from cheap seats. Indeed.

Im so sorry about this but Ive been advised by the doctor to not do any shows for a month. I may also need surgery but the initial suggestion from the doc is for me to rest at home for that time and see how I am in a few weeks.

Savings Tax Directive Is One Year Old,

It's just a year since the EU Savings Tax Directive swung into action, and IOM-based Derbyshire Offshore says it doesn't seem to have been the disaster for the world of offshore that many predicted.

Introducing a new, higher rate on Derbyshire's Interest Accumulator account, Fiona Passey, Director of Offshore Banking says, 'Whilst the overall impact of the new Directive continues to be far less than expected, this new account gives customers a valuable tax planning option as the interest and tax are deferred for a minimum of two years and then only paid at the customer's request."

The European Savings Tax Directive was introduced a year ago, with the aim of clarifying the position of the taxation of offshore deposit accounts for EU residents. For offshore financial centres such as the Isle of Man, a withholding tax option was introduced for those customers who wanted to preserve the confidentiality of their banking affairs.

More bad storms expected in area

Severe thunderstorms that brought accidents, fires and flooding to the region Friday afternoon will likely continue today.

The weather is the result of a slow-moving cold front colliding with a warm flow of air from the south, said Rick Curry with the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

"It's just ripe for kicking off thunderstorms," he said.

Curry said the storms in our area are part of a line of thunderstorms stretching from North Carolina to Salisbury, Md. While the rain tapered off Friday night, similar storms could reappear this afternoon and into Sunday. Curry said there is a 30 percent to 50 percent chance of rain in the afternoon throughout the weekend.

Friday's weather brought problems throughout the region. Heavy rain flooded roads, and lightning sparked fires in James City and York counties.

King Arthur

WHAT A witty, whimsical, mesmerising and meltingly beautiful entertainment the American choreographer Mark Morris has made of Henry Purcell’s semi-opera. It’s a village fête, a seaside show and a surreal pageant of British eccentrics from all eras and many mythologies, rolled into one and done with winning grace.

And how audaciously Morris has refurbished this bizarre Baroque hybrid for our impatient century. Try staging King Arthur as it was done in 1691 — a sprawling historical play by Dryden, intermittently spiced with Purcell’s music — and you would end up with a four-hour show, involving parallel casts of actors and singers, costing millions (just what Covent Garden did in the 1990s).
