Mopping up the mess

Just as the floods didn't arrive until after the rains had stopped and the sun was out, there was a delayed reaction to the stress.

As long as the community was waiting to see how high the water would rise, the tension seemed to stop time and suspend action. But once the danger had passed, the tension broke and spilled over. A different kind of mud. Just as messy.

From Shaw's windows, opened wide to allow the hot, dry breeze to sweep out the stale air, voices could be heard bickering over how to maneuver heavy furniture. "We tried it your way. Twice. And it didn't work! Now let's try it my way. OK?"

"You always turn on the ones you love," explains Betsey Blair, a friend who was helping Shaw clean out the house. "Who better to vent with than the ones you always count on?"

Throughout the day, the doorbell kept ringing.

Gamebookers Restate Offer to Even Up Wimbledon Prize Money

Gamebookers, the global online betting and casino company has restated its offer of 30,000 pounds Sterling to the eventual winner of the Wimbledon's women's singles competition in response to Wimbledon organisers defiance in awarding equal prize money to men and women.

The 30,000 pounds Sterling has been set aside by Gamebookers and will make up the shortfall to take women's prize money to 655,000 pounds Sterling, equal to that of the men's competition.

The issue has raised its head now that Wimbledon is upon us and a number of women's tennis stars are voicing their opinions. Venus Williams feels, "Wimbledon's stance devalues the principle of meritocracy(i)."

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell added her views by stating she would like to join the chorus of voices across tennis urging the Wimbledon organizers to consign the inequality to the past and bring the prize structure in line with the rest of world tennis.

HSBC Manx Youth Games

After 5 months of weekly sessions, the HSBC Manx Youth Games cricket competition took place on Saturday at Cronkbourne. 6 teams took part: Douglas North 1, Douglas North 2, Douglas South, West, North and South. The coaching sessions were taken by ECB qualified coaches from several clubs from around the Island, with clubs taking ownership of particular sessions. An example of this was the South (Castletown) & the North (Ramsey). As in previous years, many of these kids will be playing in the IOMCA U11 league, which is due to start on the 26th May.

The standard of the MYG competition was high, and coming into the competition there was no clear favourite. The West, with players of experience from previous years, were identified early as one of the stand out sides, and the consistent Douglas South also shone.

Friends give Easley a sweetheart deal

OCEAN - On the sparkling waters of Bogue Sound, just across from Emerald Isle, is a place developers call 287 acres of "pure paradise."

Construction vehicles plow through sand as workers clear land for Cannonsgate, a planned gated community of million-dollar homes on the Intracoastal Waterway, 16 miles west of Morehead City.

The choicest corner of paradise is a one-third-acre lot that fronts the waterway on high ground at the entrance to a 75-slip marina. Its owner: Democratic Gov. Mike Easley.

And he got a good deal.

One broker involved said the governor got his pick of lots. Easley bought it last year for $549,880. That was 3 percent above its assessed tax value. The Observer found that 49 adjacent waterfront lots in the development sold for an average of 20 percent above tax value; some were as much as 36 percent higher.
