Visit of IAM Assistant Chief Examiner on 6th July

The Assistant Chief Examiner of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), Stephen Mead, is to visit the Isle of Man on Thursday 6th July. The local group of Isle of Man Advanced Motorists have arranged for him to give a talk at the TT Hospitality Suite at 7.30pm which is open to everyone interested in driving or motorcycling. The Hospitality Suite is located in the Grandstand complex on Glencrutchery Road and there is ample parking nearby. Also, Isle of Man Police and Fire and Rescue Service vehicles are to be liveried with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) logo. Although a similar association was established between the IAM and the North Wales Police last year, the Isle of Man is the first place where the IAM logo will be displayed by both the Police and Fire & Rescue Services. The association illustrates the mutual aim all three organisations to improve road safety by raising the standards of drivers and motorcyclists on the Island.

Hard fought ninth for McGuinness

John McGuinness was back out in action on Sunday at Snetterton, Norfolk for round 5 of the National Superstock Championship and the Morecambe rider rode a solid race to claim a hard fought ninth place. Fresh from his Isle of Man TT success it was back to the cut and thrust of the short circuits and with less than a second separating the top 20 in practice, it was certainly hectic stuff. The high speed 1.952-mile circuit was always going to produce close racing and John found himself in 13th place after Friday's opening qualifying session with a time of 1m09.315s. With hot and humid conditions over the course of the weekend tyre wear was causing concern and a number of riders fell during final qualifying. The stop-start nature of the session meant that John was unable to improve upon his time and he was relegated to 16th, for the final spot on the fourth row.

Senior disappointment for Finnegan

Martin Finnegan had a disappointing end to his 2006 Isle of Man TT when he was forced to retire on the fourth lap of Friday's Senior TT. The Klaffi Honda/Alpha Boilers rider was holding on to a strong 6th place at mid-race distance but the exhaust of the Honda Fireblade had cracked and he was black flagged at Ballacraine and his race was over. With conditions absolutely perfect and the Island lapping up the glorious weather, Martin blasted off the line and after the first 9 miles he found himself in 7th spot, just adrift of eventual third placed finisher Bruce Anstey. The team had worked hard after the opening Superbike race and with Ian Hutchinson retiring, Martin's opening lap of 124.595mph placed him in 6th, six seconds behind Anstey but three ahead of Carl Rennie and Paul Hunt. Like most of the other competitors, Martin went quicker on the second lap and a speed of 125.806mph, his fastest of all race week, maintained his position.

GHA at one-day conference

The Chief Executive of the GHA, Dr David McCutcheon and the GHA Finance Director, Mr Ernest Lima, together with the Chief Executive Officers of the Health Services for the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey are meeting in Jersey for a one day Conference. Other senior officers from some of the island jurisdictions are attending also. Last years Conference was held in Gibraltar. The event is taking place in the Education Centre at the Jersey General Hospital. The purpose of the Conference is to share matters of concern which affect all of the jurisdictions health care systems. The major focus this year will be on the implications of the General Medical Councils revalidation and licence to practice regulations for doctors. The regulations were originally drafted for the United Kingdom, that is the NHS, but the GMC have now been made aware that because of the short-sightness of the original draft proposals, the proposed regulations would not fit the four jurisdictions which are not part of the NHS.

McGuinness tastes TT success

HM Plant Honda rider John McGuinness claimed victory in the Isle of Man TT Supersport race but described his record-breaking speeds as "insane".

The 33-year-old had opened his 2006 campaign on the island with victory in the Superbike TT but could then only manage a fifth-placed Superstock finish.

However, he triumphed once more in the 600cc class as he completed his four laps over the 37.73-mile Mountain Course in a race-record time of one hour, 14 minutes and 3.73 seconds.
