UK. Record holding powerboat champion Steve Curtis awarded MBE in ...

Seven-time UIM Class 1 World Powerboat champion and leading light in the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Championship, Steve Curtis, has been awarded an MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours List for Services to Sport. Steves award comes on the back of his 100th powerboat grand prix victory this month in Garrucha, Spain. The win puts Steve and Spirit of Norway team mate Bjorn Gjelsten at the top of the 2006 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship. On hearing of his award, Steve said: I am really honoured to be awarded an MBE. Outside of the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Championship, powerboat racing is fairly low profile in the UK and as such receives little recognition. I hope that this award will assist in recognising the efforts of those involved within the sport and their continued hard work that keeps the UK at the forefront of powerboating around the world.

SA pastor falls from grace on Isle of Man

South African Pieter van Rooyen has had it good in the United Kingdom, working as a senior manager for Barclays Bank and heading his own popular church - but the lure of cheap, illegal labour from back home could prove to be his undoing. Van Rooyen was headhunted by Barclays, one of the world's biggest banks, in 2001. Last year, he, his wife Sonja and their two daughters, Lezandri, 14, and Shandri, 12, settled on the Isle of Man, where he subsequently started the Life Church. But his peaceful existence with his family came to a grinding halt last week, when he was accused of flying in illegal immigrants from South Africa to renovate his house, and paying them slave wages - about 1,36 (R18) an hour. .

2006 FIFA WORLD CUP: We should have done better, says Kaka

In the aftermath of their FIFA World Cup quarter-final defeat to France, the mood among the Brazil players was one of sadness and disappointment. In spite of his dejection, midfielder Kaka was one of the few who emerged from the dressing-room to face the media.

Afterwards the AC Milan star spoke exclusively to FIFAworldcup.com, and attempted to explain why the Seleo had failed in their FIFA World Cup mission.

Kakas analysis of the match was simple and concise. "In the first few minutes the game was even, but after that France got hold of possession and started to control the game," he explained.

When asked as to why the Brazilians had not imposed themselves on the match to a greater extent, the midfielder was more reflective. "At a time like this, straight after weve been knocked out at the quarter-final stage, it is impossible to say.

Love in all its quirkiness

If you're not scared of zombies, vampire-guy Bela Lugosi or a crazy ballerina who runs with scissors, local playwright K.K. Gordon has crafted a show that just might challenge your ideas about life, death and love.

"Dancing, Dancing Came the Dead" limbos into Showcase Theatre in Exeter this weekend with a cast of quirky characters led by the protagonist, a filmmaker who is trying his hand at a new career.

"It's an artistic love story," playwright Gordon said of the script, which he's been revising for nine years. "The main character used to be a filmmaker, but now he's a gravedigger because his girlfriend died.

"She was a painter, and she painted socio-cultural icons. Two of her paintings were Elvis Presley and Bela Lugosi. Because she put so much of herself into those paintings and because he loves her so much, those paintings come to life."

Sorrowing, wistful Paul is trying to make a new film -- with an actress who has been in love with him for a long time.

Raconteurs Announce NYC Show, Single Details

Jack White's boy band the Raconteurs have announced a whopping one-date American tour, which will begin and end on April 7 at New York City's Irving Plaza. Whoa, slow down! You don't want to overexert yourself, man.

The show will be the White/Brendan Benson/Greenhornes supergroup's first American appearance. It follows a brief string of UK dates, including a gig in Scotland which White allegedly played dressed in full Scottish regalia, kilt and all.

Tailing the Raconteurs' big stateside debut by, oh, four months, is a stop at Lollapalooza 2006.

This is the big time:

04-07 New York, NY - Irving Plaza
08-04 Chicago, IL - Grant Park (Lollapalooza)

Both shows will be in support of the Raconteurs' debut album Broken Boy Soldiers, slated to hit shelves May 16 via Third Man Records/V2 in both CD and deluxe gatefold vinyl formats.

Edgewood man accused of threatening casinos

An Edgewood man is facing federal charges after he allegedly threatened northeast Iowa casinos by letter and telephone.

According to a complaint filed against him Friday in federal court in Cedar Rapids, Greg Johnson admitted his threats to a postal inspector during a raid at his parents home, where he was also living.

According to an affidavit with the case, Johnson told U.S. Postal Inspector Kevin Marshall that he wrote and mailed threatening letters and telephoned bomb threats to the Isle of Capri Casino in Marquette and the Diamond Jo Casino in Dubuque.

According to the affidavit, Johnson mailed the letters and called in the bomb threats because he saw them as justice for what the casinos did to him. Johnson had been barred from both casinos for disorderly conduct.

Gamebookers Restate Offer to Even Up Wimbledon Prize Money

Gamebookers, the global online betting and casino company has restated its offer of 30,000 pounds Sterling to the eventual winner of the Wimbledon's women's singles competition in response to Wimbledon organisers defiance in awarding equal prize money to men and women.

The 30,000 pounds Sterling has been set aside by Gamebookers and will make up the shortfall to take women's prize money to 655,000 pounds Sterling, equal to that of the men's competition.

The issue has raised its head now that Wimbledon is upon us and a number of women's tennis stars are voicing their opinions. Venus Williams feels, "Wimbledon's stance devalues the principle of meritocracy(i)."

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell added her views by stating she would like to join the chorus of voices across tennis urging the Wimbledon organizers to consign the inequality to the past and bring the prize structure in line with the rest of world tennis.

PartyGaming to buy online bookmaker Gamebookers

LONDON, July 2 (Reuters) - The world's biggest online gaming group, PartyGaming (PRTY.L: Quote, Profile, Research), is in talks to buy online bookmaker Gamebookers, an industry source said on Sunday.

PartyGaming recently arranged a $500 million loan with Dresdner Kleinwort and Royal Bank of Scotland, part of which is intended to fund an acquisition.

PartyGaming shares rose by 2 percent last Thursday on speculation it was planning to buy either Gamebookers or Sweden's Unibet (UNIBsdb.ST: Quote, Profile, Research).

But one industry executive told Reuters on Sunday he was certain it was the former.

"A million to one it's Gamebookers and not Unibet," he said, without giving further details.

Antigua-licensed Gamebookers was founded in 1998 and is owned by Isle of Man-based Trident Gaming.

Free Internet Security Course

Building on the success of the previous four Internet Security Awareness courses that have already taken place this year, The DTI are offering owners/managers of small businesses another opportunity to attend the IBS Consulting, Internet Security Awareness course delivered by Peter Ginty Head of IBS Consulting at the International Business School. A key enabler of e-business is security. However, there is a misunderstanding that security is all about IT security protocols. Its not, it is about people and awareness. Small/medium size organisations and consumers are the most vulnerable groups. In general, they are the least aware of the threats of cyber crime; they have the least knowledge of the basic steps that can be taken to protect themselves and they have the least assistance available to them.
