Trondheim has a classic setting, surrounded by hills and set on the banks of a graceful fjord. For somewhere so far from anywhere else (Oslo is 300 miles south), the city has cosmopolitan credentials, with an impressive cathedral, fetching wooden architecture, excellent museums and a lively student population. Norway's former capital shows its charms best in summer, when barely an hour separates sunset from dawn. .
Its not just about the football. For the next four weeks, Germany wants desperately to charm the lederhosen off us in every possible way to persuade the world that it can host a lot more than football tournaments, opera marathons and beer festivals: You went out on penalties, now come back on holiday. And, perhaps surprisingly, not everyone needs convincing. Quietly (efficiently?), Germany has become a destination for discerning travellers. Not, admittedly, in the short term, when men with St Georges crosses creosoted into their chest hair will be doing their best to render the entire nation uninhabitable but, once the tear gas clears, what will remain is an unfailingly polite, hospitable country, in quiet possession of a handful of genuinely special destinations. A trickle of Brits are already choosing the Bavarian Alps over the money-grubbier French and Italian sections, sampling the vinicultural peace of Franconia ahead of the Loire, even plumping for the quirky chic of the northern coast in summer, rather than the crowds, costs and, well, Germans tarnishing the Med.
Chichén Itzá. Chichén Itzá, a small counter restaurant in a communal mercado south of downtown, is the most serious Yucatecan restaurant in town at the moment, its menu a living, habanero chile–intensive thesaurus of the panuchos and codzitos, sopa de lima and papadzules, banana-leaf tamales and shark casseroles that make up one of Mexico's most thrilling cuisines. From the delicious banana leaf–baked pork called cochinito pibil to the cinnamon-scented bread pudding called caballeros pobres, Chichén Itzá, named for the vast temple complex north of Cancún, is as fresh as a marketplace restaurant in Mérida. Not at HigbeeCOLD SPRING - It's not the first time, but Lower Township police are using the recent incident of two adults found partially and completely nude on Higbee Beach to remind everyone that it's a no-no to take all your clothes off in public in the township. Police were called to the beach at about 2:30 p.m.
GRIH Comment: The following is a copy of a letter sent to Sen. John McCain by one of his good friends and a fellow prisoner of war in North Vietnam during those awful days. His clarity of thought concerning the Akaka bill speaks for itself. Dear John: This is one last appeal; PLEASE vote NO on the Akaka Bill, S147. I know you find it difficult to go against the elected representatives of Hawaii, but let me explain. Governor Lingle (with whom I agree on most issues), Hawaii's Congressional delegation and State Legislature are all in favor of the bill because it will guarantee MILLIONS IN CONTINUED FEDERAL FUNDING for over 150 programs specifically for Native Hawaiians (race based) most of which they are eligible for anyway based upon NEED, like anyone else. The legislators view the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) like they view the Hawaii Govt.
