Maps drawn by heart

WELL, SHE CERTAINLY FOOLED ME. A MINUTE ON Google is all it would have taken to check, but there didn't seem any point. So convincingly does Margaret Elphinstone write about the tiny island of Ellan Bride, just off the Isle of Man's south-west coast and the setting for her latest novel, that there seemed not the slightest room for doubt. Of all the fictional islands in all the world, this one feels the most solidly real.

In Light, Ellan Bride is a jagged apostrophe of an island, not even half a mile wide, right in the middle of the tidal race sweeping round the southern tip of the Calf of Man. There has been a private lighthouse owned by the Duke of Atholl there for decades, but now it's 1831 and Robert Stevenson has ordered the construction of a new one. His surveyor, Archibald Buchanan, comes out with a three-man team to check the lie of the land.

Surfcasters should enjoy perfect week

They say it's about being in the right place at the right time to make dreams come true, and I'd say that trusty adage applies directly to this week's surf fishing.

I know I've been barking about the big bass activity the past few weeks, but this only comes around once a year, so it's worth it to give it another solid week of coverage, especially now.

Why now?

Look at the tides this week, they're perfect for the surf fisherman. High tides will lay into the shoreline from 5 a.m. through 9 a.m. all weekend, with heavy water flooding the shores in the promo morning hours, as well as the evening hours. Add to that attractive adult bunker schools that still hover along the coast, throw in some schools of flashy, tasty hickory shad, and you've got a recipe to put a trophy pair of Ol' Pajamas onto the beach.

Smoking ban upheld

A Douglas County District Court judge has again rejected arguments that the city's smoking ban is unconstitutional.

Judge Jack Murphy has issued an order denying a request by Lawrence bar operator Dennis Steffes to suspend the city's smoking ban while he wages a lawsuit alleging that the ban is unconstitutionally vague and illegally oversteps the state's laws.

Murphy had ruled in late December that the smoking ban was constitutional, but Steffes — who operates Coyotes and Last Call — asked the court to reconsider. Murphy again rejected Steffes arguments and said that there was no evidence to support a suspension of the ban, nor was their evidence that the ban was unconstitutionally vague or had overstepped state law.

McGuinness - Simply the best! Pt. 1

John McGuinness shattered the record books in Friday's 6-lap Senior TT, taking his 11th TT victory in total and upping the outright lap record to a sensational 129.451mph. The Morecambe ace broke his record from Saturday on the opening lap and then went quicker still to stamp his authority on the race. Although it was tight in the early stages John and the HM Plant Honda pushed hard and at one stage his lead was over 30 seconds but for the final two laps he rode to his signals and eventually took the chequered flag some 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Australian Cameron Donald with Kiwi Bruce Anstey in third. Like the rest of race week, the Isle of Man was bathed in glorious sunshine and the heat was at its highest so it was going to be a gruelling 6 laps for the competitiors. As expected, the opening lap was incredibly close and at Glen Helen John led by just 0.8seconds from Ian Hutchinson with Donald just a further second back.

Yn Chruinnaght Committee Press Release Pt. 3

A pair of groups from Wales will be travelling to the Isle of Man for Yn Chruinnaght 2006. DAWNSWYR SIR CONWY was established especially to compete in the prestigious national Gŵyl Cerdd Dant festival in November 2004. They are an energetic team of Welsh folk dancers/musicians led by Dr Prydwen Elfed-Owens. The majority are teachers in schools within the county of Conwy. The team has spent a very busy year performing at various festivals including functions to welcome visitors to the county from the various countries of Europe and beyond. DAWNSWYR SIR CONWY have resurrected two traditional Welsh celebrations in the county namely the ancient Old Welsh New Year or Hen Galan on the one hand - with the arrival of the Mari Lwyd and company of six merrymen - and on the other hand, the Mayday celebration with a performance of the Welsh morris dance, Cadi Ha, to include a bedecked Summer branch and the colourful characters of Cadi and Bili.
