The best of British fests

At £1 a ticket, the 1,500 revellers who rambled down to Somerset in 1970 for a shambolic festival organised by a young farmer called Michael Eavis got a bargain. Not only did they watch T Rex and drink free milk from the farm’s dairy herd, ever since, they have had the priceless privilege of being able to brag: “I was at the first-ever Glastonbury.”

Over the past three decades, the legends that have sprung up around the festival are such that Eavis’s decision to give himself and his cattle a sabbatical this year leaves a hole in festivalgoers’ summer calendars. Other huge events offer impressive line-ups — Radiohead and Morrissey at V festival, or Franz Ferdinand at the Carling Weekend in Leeds and Reading, for instance — but away from the stages, they lack the atmosphere that is the basis of the best festival tales.

The steady hand

Imagine that you have been working in a big organisation for 37 years when something goes badly wrong at the top. You are plucked from a position a few rungs down the management hierarchy, where you have been delivering good results at regional level. You suddenly become chief executive, responsible for the employment of 1.4 million people and the wellbeing of more than 50 million customers. If you make a hash of your decisions, there may be fatal consequences for users of your services - and for the organisation you lead.

That is what life has been like over the past 100 days for Sir Ian Carruthers, acting chief executive of the NHS in England since the sudden resignation of Sir Nigel Crisp in March. We have heard a lot during this period from his political boss, health secretary Patricia Hewitt, but little from Carruthers, who runs the organisation.

Retiree Wins Record Slot Jackpot

BILOXI, Mississippi – (PRESS RELEASE) -- A 65-year-old retiree visiting the Isle of Capri Casino in Biloxi hit a $12.4 million statewide MegaJackpot(R) while playing a popular Wheel of Fortune(R) $1 slot machine Thursday evening, and in doing so, the winner -- who wishes to remain anonymous -- set a world record for this particular slot system.

"This is the first time I have ever played a Wheel of Fortune(R) slot machine," said the stunned winner after IGT technicians and Mississippi State Gaming officials verified the jackpot. "I visit the Isle of Capri several times every year, but usually blackjack is my game."

From the Isle of Capri Casino's perspective, the world record MegaJackpot(R) gives a huge boost to the Gulf Coast and its gaming destinations, which are still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina 10 months ago.

Parkinson bids to win over States members

THE deputy Treasury minister will make a last-ditch attempt this week to convince States members of the merits of his zero-20 tax proposals. Deputy Charles Parkinson confirmed that he would place nine amendments to the corporate tax reform debate at the end of June.
He remains confident that zero-20 would be better than the Policy Councils favoured zero-10 option.
He said he was optimistic of success and confident of compliance with the European Union Code of Conduct on Business Taxation.
Deputy Parkinson has invited all States members to a presentation tomorrow and on Friday to learn about them.
I wont really know how much support I have until meeting deputies in the next two days but I know a number will support them, he said.
Clearly there are some who will not under any circumstances, but I will have a better idea by Friday.

Successful tarmac test for Fagg in Ireland - Pt. 1

Last weekend saw Isle of Man based co-driver Rob Fagg travel to Ireland to contest the Shell Donegal International Rally alongside MSA British Rally Elite member James Wozencroft in the Dealer Team Suzuki Ignis Super 1600. Isle of Man Steam Packet Scholarship recipient Fagg and Wozencroft were using the event as a test prior the upcoming tarmac rounds of the Tesco 99 Octane British Rally Championship which they are contesting this year. After a successful recce and test prior the event the team were looking forward to the 22 stages that lay ahead over the three day event. It was not long though before they encountered their first problem, a half spin mid way through the first stage left them caught between two grass banks on a blind left hander with very little room to manoeuvre, and with cars running a 30 second intervals there was not much time until the next car would be on top of them.

The island saviour of lost souls who imported 'slaves' to do up his house

GOD chose Pieter Van Rooyen to lead the broken, the depressed, the rejected and the confused and save their souls for Christ. Or so the balding 46-year-old South African, a former financial adviser at Barclays bank, says.

But He is unlikely to approve of this self-appointed shepherd — who puts himself on a par with Noah, Moses and Abraham — importing illegal immigrants from his native country and putting them to work renovating his Isle of Man home for £1.36 an hour.

Van Rooyen and his Life Church, the evangelical ministry he founded in Douglas, the island’s capital, face ruin after he appeared in a Manx court to admit charges of faking documents that allowed five South African workers to enter the country illegally. He insisted that his intention was to coach them in spiritual matters, but in reality, the court was told, they were set to work as cheap labour doing up his family home in Onchan.

Help - Dangerous Legislation

GRIH Comment: The following is a copy of a letter sent to Sen. John McCain by one of his good friends and a fellow prisoner of war in North Vietnam during those awful days. His clarity of thought concerning the Akaka bill speaks for itself.

Dear John:

This is one last appeal; PLEASE vote NO on the Akaka Bill, S147. I know you find it difficult to go against the elected representatives of Hawaii, but let me explain.

Governor Lingle (with whom I agree on most issues), Hawaii's Congressional delegation and State Legislature are all in favor of the bill because it will guarantee MILLIONS IN CONTINUED FEDERAL FUNDING for over 150 programs specifically for Native Hawaiians (race based) most of which they are eligible for anyway based upon NEED, like anyone else. The legislators view the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) like they view the Hawaii Govt.

A Disappointing Weekend At The Glen For Alex

Isle Of Man racing driver Alex Lloyd completed another round of the Indy Pro series at the historic circuit of Watkins Glen in the AFS racing car on the weekend 2nd-4th June. It was an extremely successful test day on the Friday, with Alex topping the timesheets in the sessions by a substantial amount. Weather was consistent throughout, dry and reasonably warm. The day finished with Alex setting a new track record of 1min 38.2 secs, with the previous record being at 1 min 39.6 secs. This set Alex in a good position for the rest of the weekend. Testing went very well, Alex said. We were trying a brand new set up and made big improvements throughout the day. It was nice to be as fast as we were as it really shows that the hard work that every individual within the team has put in over the last few races is really paying off.
